Virginia Commonwealth Medical Center Endoscopy

The Alvin M. Zfass Endoscopy unit located in the VCU Gateway Building provides both routine and advanced endoscopic care to over 10,000 patients annually. The mission of the endoscopy unit is to deliver high-quality, compassionate endoscopic care in both an inpatient and outpatient setting.

The population served ranges from young adults to geriatric patients. The specialties supported are gastroenterology, hepatology, colorectal surgery, bariatric surgery, pulmonology, and cardiothoracic. The endoscopy unit consists of five procedure rooms, a fluoroscopy room, two bronchoscopy rooms, and a manometry room.

The endoscopy team is comprised of a nurse manager, nurse clinician, nurse practitioner, nurse navigator, registered nurses, endoscopy technicians, and a unit secretary. This energetic team has been awarded the highest percentage of hand hygiene among PeriOp services and has achieved having the most certified endoscopy technicians.

The HLD (High-Level Disinfectant) dept is a state-of-the art unit located in the endoscopy department. Frank Daniels and his HLD team were recognized for Best Practice from The Joint Commission as well as being a module practice for CMS. The HLD team consists of over thirty team members and is growing.

In April 2022 VCU Health opened its first outpatient endoscopy center in Stony Point to expand the endoscopy services for the community. This unit consists of four procedure rooms and a manometry room that allows easy access to routine diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
